A new week has begun and that means a new Brotherhood Character Deep Dive article! In this series we take a deep dive into the affiliated Brotherhood characters. This week we're taking a look at the slippery boy himself - Toad!
Mortimer Toynbee, known as Toad, is a genetically flawed mutant. Visibly mutated since birth, he was abandoned by his parents to an orphanage where he was ostracized for his appearance. When Magneto discovered and recruited him, Toad embraced the mission to conquer the human race who had rejected and degraded him. Toad serves Magneto as an unquestioning lackey using his mutant abilities of enhanced jumping and prehensile tongue.
Character Card
First, let's take a look at Toad's character card. We'll need to discuss both sides of his card here as there's a slight change on his injured side.
Toad is a 2 threat character, he has 5 health, a medium move and has 3/3/3 defences across the board. This is extremely good for a 2 threat character as those base line stats are about average for a 3 threat character and Toad is a threat lower.
Moving on to his attacks and the first of these is his builder - Tongue lash, a range 3, 4 dice physical attack with a push on a wild. Toad wont be killing many things with this attack, but having the wild push is extremely useful for displacement and at the time of writing, this makes Toad the only 2 threat character with some form of displacement.
Toad's spender is Spit Acid, a range 2, 5 dice energy attack and it costs him 2 power to use. After the attack is resolved the target character gains the Incinerate special condition. Again, Toad probably wont be killing many things with this attack, as it's equivalent to a basic 5 dice builder on a 3 threat character. However, the auto incinerate at the end of the attack is a fantastic addition and can really help the rest of your squad with attrition.
Moving on to Toad's superpowers - the first of these is Finders Keepers which costs Toad 2 power and also costs him 1 of his 2 actions. Toad can choose an allied character within 2 of himself and move one asset or civilian token the chosen character is holding and move it onto himself. There is a stipulation in the superpower that he cannot hold more tokens than the crisis specifies.
His second superpower is Hop which again, will cost Toad 2 power to use (there's a running theme here). This allows Toad to place himself within 2 of his current position. This is great for additional movement, however it can only be used once per turn.
Now, for the annoying one - Slippery. After an attack targeting Toad is resolved and Toad was damaged by the attack, he may spend, you guessed it, 2 power to use this superpower, Toad then gets to make a medium move once the attack is resolved. This frankly, is one of his best superpowers (we'll get on to the other one next), not only does it give him out of activation movement to potentially get himself on to an objective, but in a lot of cases, it gives him an opportunity to move out of range of your opponents next attack which really helps with his survivability as he has no other meaningful defence tech.
Prehensile Tongue allows Toad to interact with objectives from range 2 instead of the normal range 1. Note this is only INTERACTS, so any stand on secures he still needs to be within 1 of the objective token.
Toad also has the benefit of Wall Crawler.
There is a change to Toad on his injured side, though it is only a small change it is an important one. Instead of a 5 health pool he drops down to a 3 health pool on his injured side so it's important to tread very carefully with him once injured as he's extremely vulnerable to be being KO'd.
Tactics Cards
We'll now discuss tactics cards - we'll only be discussing the cards included in his box that can actually be used by Toad.
Unfortunately Toad does not come with any character specific cards and there's only Asteroid M included in the box that Toad can actually use. Asteroid M is probably Brotherhood's signature card, and is arguably their best - it is a Brotherhood affiliated card so it can only be taken if your squad is affiliated to Brotherhood. Two Brotherhood of Mutants Characters may both spend 2 power to play this card. Place one of the two characters not holding an objective token within 1 of the other character. A note to make about this card, is that it specifically states "Brotherhood of Mutants character" - this means that they must be affiliated with Brotherhood so your splash characters cannot use this card - the characters playing this card must be listed as Brotherhood affiliated in the affiliation list.
Asteroid M is straight up a fantastic card, it can not only be used for aggressive plays to move the likes of Magneto up the board early or across the board to reposition but it can also be used as a defensive card to pull an injured character away from a danger zone.
Where Does He Fit In Affiliation?
Toad is the only 2 threat currently affiliated with Brotherhood, so he slots in to near enough every Brotherhood roster. Toad is easily one of the best extract runners in the game, with his interact from range 2 superpower and the ability to have extracts handed off to him - along with his excellent movement between slippery and hop he can really get around the board quickly hoovering up extracts as he goes. His wild push on his builder can also really help your team if your leaning into a more control oriented playstyle and his auto incinerate on his spender can really help your team if your leaning into a more attrition focused game plan
A caveat with Toad though, is that he can be very squishy. He does have slippery which can give him a bit of a get out clause, but as mentioned before other than slippery he has no defensive tech so you really have to be careful with his placement on the board - especially when your looking to move him within range 2 of a target to try and get a push.
That said, Toad is a fantastic addition to Brotherhood, and can count themselves lucky to have one of the best 2 threat characters in affiliation.
